ABSTRACT
The origins of the gladiatorial combat (munus gladiatorum) may never be discovered. At present the best working hypothesis for the origins of these spectacles assumes that the Etruscan civilisation adopted this custom from the Samnites of southern Italy, Campania and Lucania.1
