ABSTRACT

This book is about television drama, but obviously it cannot be about all television drama. Any book, any communication medium, is selective; it has biases, it ‘distorts’ the field – not only in what it chooses to talk about and what it omits, but also in how it talks about what is selected. The question then is: what motivates the selections made? I’ll begin by looking at some principles of selection in other books in the field of TV drama, as a way of introducing the choices in my own.
