ABSTRACT

Textual analysis is concerned with identifying and 'unpacking' the formal qualities of texts. It is primarily concerned with the underpinning structures of texts and their constituent characteristics; as such, it has become closely associated with semiotic analysis, often linked to psychoanalytical concepts. In the case of popular music, this means examining the musical constituents of recordings of songs, with particular attention to their lyrics, and with their audiovisual format: the music video (see Chapter 9). Space precludes dealing with record and CD sleeve covers, which can also be considered a form of text.
