A title of respect accorded to a trained religious leader and teacher of Jewish law. ‘Rabbi’ has been in use since the first century and represents the Hebrew ‘my master’. The word is used alone or as a prefix to a last name. Examples of its use occur in many novels which feature Jewish family life, such as St Urbain’s Horseman, by Mordecai Richler.
