ABSTRACT
‘That’s the way, Yank,’ says an attendant in a British cinema to an American soldier, in The Magic Army, by Leslie Thomas. The novel contains several other examples of the term, including the plural form Yanks’. American soldiers in Britain, regrettably, became used to the slogan ‘Yanks, go home’ which appeared in public places after the Second World War.
