ABSTRACT
When we turn the page to twentieth-century language studies, we meet with a distinct sense of discontinuity from the nineteenth century. Readers today are accustomed to thinking of Boasian relativism and Saussurean structuralism as radical departures from nineteenth-century strategies and approaches to language and linguistics.
