Howells (1837–1920), American novelist and essayist, was editor of the Atlantic Monthly 1871–81. He wrote again about Dickens in his Criticism and Fiction (New York, 1890), My Literary Passions (New York, 1895) and Heroines of Fiction, vol. i (New York, 1901).
