ABSTRACT
William Brighty Rands (1823–82), journalist and miscellaneous writer, wrote many poems and fairy stories for children, and was named ‘the laureate of the nursery.’ ‘Matthew Browne’ was one of his pseudonyms. His essay ‘From Faust to Mr Pickwick’ appeared in the Contemporary Review, July 1880, xxxviii, 162–76.
