ABSTRACT

Hirst (1817–74) was a Philadelphia lawyer, journalist, and poet, with a reputation for eccentricity. Hirst and Poe were friendly in Philadelphia, and they collaborated on Poe's Saturday Museum biography of 1843. Hirst always remained proud of his friendship with Poe, even though he suffered from the delusion that Poe plagiarized from him — see Works,13, 209–13; Poems,ed. T. O. Mabbott,p. 355.
