ABSTRACT

Briggs (1804–77) was a journalist and novelist well known under his pen name ‘Harry Franco’. He founded the Broadway Journal, but Poe pushed him out, and abused him in a ‘Literati’ sketch — see Works, 15,20–3. Briggs was a friend of Lowell, and an associate of Poe's enemies in the Knickerbocker clique. He was at this time editor of Holden's Dollar Magazine in New York.
