ABSTRACT

Daniel's tirade caused some controversy: John R. Thompson, editor of the Messenger, issued an embarrassed editorial apology to Griswold and Willis; meanwhile, Willis produced a Richmond correspondent who replied to Daniel's ‘frightful caricature’ — see Quinn,p. 667. Baudelaire drew heavily on Daniel's review for his knowledge of Poe— see W.T. Bandy, ‘New Light on Baudelaire and Poe’, Yale French Studies,No. Io (I953), 65–9.
