Daniel's tirade caused some controversy: John R. Thompson, editor of the Messenger,issued an embarrassed editorial apology to Griswold and Willis; meanwhile, Willis produced a Richmond correspondent who replied to Daniel's ‘frightful caricature’ — see Quinn,p. 667.
