ABSTRACT

Paul-Emile Daurand Forgues (1813–83) was a critic, editor of La Revue des deux mondes, and a prolific translator of contemporary English and American authors. His translation of ‘A Descent into the Maelstrom’ was published by La Revue britannique in September 1846;. he followed this on 12 October with a version of ‘The Murders in the Rue Morgue’ in Le Commerce which provoked charges of plagiarism and culminated in a libel suit. Curiously, Poe was also engaged in a libel suit in New York at the same time.
