ABSTRACT

Morris (1802 — 64) was a poet, editor, and journalist; he is best remembered for his sentimental poem, ‘Woodman, Spare That Tree!’. The Evening Mirror,a daily for ‘the upper ten thousand’, was started by Morris and his co-worker, N.P. Willis, in October 1844. Willis had recently left for Europe, but Morris was also friendly to Poe: on 18 November he reprinted Poe's ‘Preface’ to The Raven and other Poems, adding, ‘We like the spirit that dictated it.’
