Dwight (1813–93) was an early member of the Transcendental Club, and contributed important music criticism to the Dial and the Harbinger. Poe actively resented Dwight's attack on him: he reprinted the review in the Broadway Journal (13 December), together with a point by point reply to what he mockingly called the ‘Snook Farm Phalanx’ — see Works, 13, 27–32.
