ABSTRACT

Poe suggested that Cooke should revise Lowell's memoir of him for his projected book on ‘The Living Literati of the U.S.’: he wrote on 16 April 1846, ‘I fancy that you appreciate me — estimate my merits & demerits at a just value’ (Letters,2, 314). Cooke did not reply until 4 August, but then he did agree to ‘continue the memoir’ (Works,17, 262–4), and Poe supplied him with some further information— see Letters,2, 327–30. Poe's book never appeared.
