The original spelling of the passages gathered here has been preserved, though short's' has in all cases been substituted for long. References to modem editions of works cited have been given only for convenience of consultation: nowhere have I attempted a bibliography of reprintings. All enclosures in square brackets are editorial. Where continuity of sense is not at risk, line references have been substituted for quotations from Spenser and certain other easily accessible authors.
