ABSTRACT

One plausible genealogy of postmodernity begins with Nietzsche's proclamation of the death of God. The death of God does not foreclose questions of transcendence and radical alterity, but instead underscores their urgency and "ultimate cruelty" (Nietzsche 1976: 63). Despite – or because of – God's death, the concept of the sacred has been central to many postmodern thinkers' investigations of otherness, violence, and the limits of meaning.
