ABSTRACT

It was a strange genius that died with James Joyce-one of the strangest in the history of literature. Whatever his ultimate position in that history may be, whatever value future generations may put upon his work, he is certain to be remembered as the author of two of the most singular books ever written. There is nothing in all literature really comparable to Ulysses and certainly nothing-if it too may be placed in that category-comparable to Finnegans Wake.
