ABSTRACT

I managed to read Finnegans Wake once by devoting a couple of hours a day to it, over a period of about three months. Then I met American writer Thornton Wilder, himself a Finnegans Wake addict.

‘My boy,’ he said, ‘take my advice. Don’t ever try to read that book again. I have spent so much time reading and re-reading it that I have been unable to write many plays and novels that I wanted to write.’
