ABSTRACT
Second chapter: it begins to go uphill. Stephen has been our hero, so far; now he resolutely turns his back on us. The tone is no longer that of the narrative, there is not a path, sentences are more and more chopped-up, with references to a lot of things about which we know little or nothing, such as: the history of Ireland; ancient history; philosophy; scholastic theology; early English poetry.
