ABSTRACT

Not so many years ago Mr. James Joyce was an ill-paid teacher of English in Trieste. To-day, as the author of Ulysses, he has become a European figure…. Notoreity has given dangerous curiosity to the writings of Joyce. But his revolutionary art is an influence working, for good or bad, in the minds of younger writers. Coteries have been formed to explain the enigmatic work of Joyce. ‘Consciousnessstream,’ ‘cerebralist’ are among the high-flown words used to enlighten us regarding this writer who delves into the twentiethcentury mind and has always called a spade by its improper name.
