ABSTRACT

The 'sixteen lines' Kippis praises here are the last four stanzas of 'A Valediction: forbidding Mourning', which he quotes from Walton's Life oJDonne. He reports at length Joseph Warton's criticism of Donne' s Satyres (see No. 91). Then he gives some of Ben Jonson's remarks from the 'Conversations with Drummond' (No.3 (ii),) and rounds off the account of Donne's verse with extracts from Johnson's Life oj CotVley, which includes three quotations from Donne.
