ABSTRACT

Known in his own day as the historian of the Italian Renaissance, John Addington Symonds (1940-93) would later write the introduction to the Mermaid edition of Webster and Tourneur (1888). As his seven volume 'Renaissance in Italy' (1875-86) is marked by the fluent as well as the florid, so is this earlier appreciation of Webster and his colleagues.
