ABSTRACT

Dickens had evidently read the story eventually titled ‘The Diary of Anne Rodway’ in manuscript; he published it in Household Words in two parts on 19 and 26 July, and Collins included it in The Queen of Hearts. In another letter, written to Miss Coutts two days after the one quoted, he urges her to read the story, saying that it ‘possesses very remarkable merit-especially the close of it’. Text of the two letters in ‘Nonesuch’ edition, II, 791-3.
