ABSTRACT

It is frequently difficult to perceive the arguments contained in written or spoken words. The problem arises because we do many things with words. We use them to signal conventions, to provide context and to report evidence besides making claims and presenting arguments. Consequently, a general method of argument analysis is required to identify the main features in a piece of reasoning. An approach, based on the R Þ C notation with subscripts, is developed in this chapter as a method for eliciting argument from text and setting out the reasoning in a clear and intelligible way.
