ABSTRACT

Any argument whose premises do not entail the conclusion can be rejected as illogical. However, valid inference alone does not ensure that an argument is sound. Detecting a fallacy or other inconsistency is normally sufficient to discredit a line of reasoning without further examination. Identifying an undeclared claim clarifies an argument to facilitate critical appraisal. Deductive analysis also works positively to make a logical case which presents a sharpened focus on the role of evidence.
