ABSTRACT

Dawn broke on 17 August to reveal Coote's armada of boats and little ships widely scattered on the waters of lake Mareotis some three miles west of Alexandria. A change of wind during the night had driven more than half his vessels to leeward, and by the time they were collected again at 10 a.m. the enemy had brought several hundred men and a pair of horse artillery guns to the intended landing point. Coote's last landing had been made on a constricted front in Aboukir bay, but this time he had scope to manoeuvre. Pushing the boats of Finch's brigade towards the shore to pin down the waiting enemy, he moved the rest of his force two miles further west and landed unopposed.!
