Hardy wrote to the novelist and travel-writer, Kathleen Macquoid, in 1874:
The question whether ordinary types should or should not be depicted as the heroines of novels, is such a nice one that it is difficult to discuss it in writing. I myself, I must confess, have no great liking for the perfect woman of fiction, but this may be for purely artistic reasons.
