ABSTRACT

All developing countries have the same general economic goalselimination of poverty, raising of living standards, industrialisation, agricultural efficiency and technological progress. Not all countries approach these goals in the same way, nor are all countries equally endowed with natural resources. Egypt has the Nile at the centre of her development, but few other resources and the handicap of a rapidly expanding population. All economic planning has to take account of these factors and to deal with the problems they pose-poverty, urban overcrowding, unemployment and low national income. These are in addition to the problems of modernising the country in the human field, accustoming workers to new techniques and modes of life, encouraging the acceptance of birth control and ensuring general efficiency. Egypt does possess, however, the advantage of a long period of development and a basic infrastructure of railways, harbours and roads.
