ABSTRACT

Mr Megasoft has been reading a book on the nature of existence. The book says that the purpose of being alive is simply to pass on your ‘genetic material’, through sex, and producing children.

There is actually quite a lot of circumstantial evidence for this. First, the sexual drive is very strong, and seems to achieve little other than the production of children. Second, at least amongst some of the population, there is a tendency to look after these children and make sacrifices for them which really cannot be explained any other way than as an investment in their own genetic future. (Certainly not altruism, as few of other people’s children arouse the same interest!) This is the ‘selfish gene’ determining behaviour. And Mr Megasoft thinks it’s a very good explanation of why we are alive, and what the point of it all is.
