ABSTRACT

Setting the budget has become one of the jobs of the subject leader that appears on the job description, turns up in all the papers from the Teacher Training Agency, and is part of most courses on doing the job. It is one of the tasks that is a worry to many new coordinators. The truth is that it is not that much of a worry because in most schools the budget is not very big! However much there is to spend, though, it is important that it is spent correctly and that agreed systems are understood by everyone concerned so that the reasons behind allocations and decisions are clear. Every school is different which makes it impossible to give a stereotype model for the fixing and spending patterns associated with setting a budget, however, we can think through the various phases of the process to apply to our own situation and a model might be helpful.
