ABSTRACT

Many of these circumstances have implications for the issue of longevity, or for the quality of their lives. These we discuss in later chapters; here we present the simple picture. We look at the proportions of women and men aged 90 and over; their marital status; their education and employment history including retirement; the impact on their lives of war and economic upheaval; their social class; their financial circumstances; particulars of their residence and their living arrangements. We illustrate the discussion with our survey data and individual examples from the study.
