ABSTRACT

Figure 5.1, based on disdnctions between models of social order advanced by Streeck and Schmitter (1985), divides human interaction into three spheres, each with its own guiding principle: solidarity in sphere I; market competition in sphere II; and authoritative regulation in sphere III. There are, in addition, ‘buffer zones’ lying between the spheres, similar but not identical in conception to Streeck and Schmitter's fourth, ‘associational’ model.
