Born: 1915, Nottingham. Family background: Father was a wholesale potato merchant but business declined
and he eventually went bankrupt when he became ill around the time of the General Strike. Mother had been a teacher. Two older siblings and one younger, plus a brother who died of diphtheria. Strong religious background as members of a Chapel where her great-uncle was an Elder. Mother a Conservative, Father had socialist leanings, though not a member of a political party.
