ABSTRACT
When the authorities decided to get involved in the fight against cancer, the role and the aims of the private associations which until then had occupied the essential part of that area were redefined. Although the state – through the ministry responsible for health problems and its Cancer Commission – intended to supervise the process of the building of cancer centres, at first it left to the League the task of ensuring the organisation of publicity.
