ABSTRACT

For statutory induction to work, the role of the induction tutor is crucial. They are members of staff chosen by the head teacher ‘to provide day to day monitoring and support’ for the NQT (DfEE 2000a: para. 1) and are key to the provision of statutory induction. The circular states that they should be:

fully aware of the requirements of the induction period and should have the necessary skills, expertise and knowledge to work effectively in the role. In particular, the induction tutor should be able to make rigorous and fair judgements about the NQT's performance in relation to the requirement for satisfactory completion of the induction period and to provide or coordinate guidance and effective support for the NQT's professional development.
