ABSTRACT

Every school and college that provides statutory induction has to have a designated Appropriate Body. This will usually be the Local Education Authority (LEA) in England, but Jersey, Guernsey, the Isle of Man and Gibraltar are also Appropriate Bodies. Sixth form colleges have a choice of which LEA they work with. Independent schools can either negotiate for an LEA to play this role or choose the Independent Schools Council – Teacher Induction Panel (ISCTIP). This chapter considers Appropriate Bodies’ statutory responsibilities and how they are carried out, and examines our research findings about their non-statutory role in providing courses for NQTs and induction tutors.
