ABSTRACT
NQTs are entitled to a 10 per cent reduction in timetable. This is enshrined not only in the induction circular but also in the School Teachers’ Pay and Conditions of Employment which sets out head teachers’ responsibility to ensure that ‘inductees’ do not teach more than 90 per cent of a normal teaching timetable (DfEE 2000c: para. 138). NQTs in our research considered the 10 per cent reduction in teaching time to be the most important and valuable part of their entitlement.
