ABSTRACT

In this chapter, I shall argue that students are intimately involved in traditional assessment, though in a very different way from their involvement in more innovative schemes. It is well known and frequently quoted that assessment ‘drives’ learning. We shall traverse some of the routes that learners take, and look at some of the obstacles they find on their way. We shall also attempt to answer the questions:

What’s wrong with traditional assessment methods? They’ve worked well up until now and why change them?
