ABSTRACT

School was also a useful place to corral youngsters and keep them out of mischief in their non-working time. A Derby employer told the 1833 Children’s Employment Commission:

All the boys that leave work on Saturdays at four o’clock we compel to attend school for about a couple of hours, not only for their improvement, but to prevent the mischief which… they were apt to get into from mere wantonness…. All the young persons under twenty are expected to attend Sunday schools.2
