      ABSTRACT

In Syntactic Structures (1957) and Aspects of the Theory of Syntax (1965) Chomsky introduced the notion of the formal, explicit, generative grammar. As indicated in Chapter 1 the Aspects model consisted of a syntactic deep structure and a surface structure. Deep structure formed the basis of semantic interpretation and surface structure was the basis for phonological representation. The two structures were mediated by transformations.
