ABSTRACT
This book is an essay which takes the recent history of Europe as an opportunity to try to say something about the social relationships and institutional arrangements of modernity. It is also an exercise in sociology, which attempts to see the intellectual enterprise called sociology as part of the problem of modernity rather than the source of objective and universally valid or reliable answers.
