ABSTRACT

Following the decision to abandon the deep-sea dumping operation, Shell received many unsolicited suggestions for how they might dismantle and dispose of the Spar, nearly 200 by the end of July and ultimately almost 450. They ranged from the totally conventional, through the imaginative to the outlandish, including turning it into a hotel or casino, using it to generate wind or wave power, sinking all or part of it to form an artificial reef or fish farm, and incorporating various bits into harbour, breakwater or bridge building projects.
