ABSTRACT

This chapter examines sorcery in more depth and also explores belief both in witchcraft, which, as we shall see, is distinguishable from sorcery and the evil eye. Sorcery, as demonstrated in the previous chapter, is a mystical force to which illness and misfortune are often attributed following rifts or ruptures in social relations. However, although specific conflicts and tensions may be said to precede direct or indirect sorcery attack, the forging of links between a particular conflict, sorcery attack and adversity is a process that requires further examination; for, while sorcery suspicions typically emerge in circumstances of perceived risk, in some cases diagnosticians may actually initiate them, as I shall show.
