This chapter discusses some of the main environmental design issues which are specific to Extra Care housing.

5.1Space Heating

The design of a space heating system for a sheltered housing scheme must address the special needs of older people. In particular it should take the following into account:

A wide variety of different space heating systems now exist, and each one can comprise a variety of different sub-systems and components. Choosing an overall system and its constituent components involves balancing a large number of often conflicting requirements. This section highlights those issues which relate specifically to sheltered housing.
