ABSTRACT
In this essay I will discuss some aspects of the phenomenon evoked by Marshall with particular, though not exclusive, reference to ‘alternative religions’, an area in which the work of Eileen Barker (e.g. 1984, 1986, 1989a) has been outstanding. Like Marshall, Dr Barker has also been an outstanding votary of religious freedom.
