ABSTRACT

Very early on in my career in the sociology of religion, I presented a paper on the political aspects of the French Protestant community (the subject of my doctorate) at the graduate seminar at the London School of Economics. That was the first time that I met Eileen Barker, who asked me a question about new religious movements in France and their overlap with the work that I was doing. My answer was sketchy to say the least, since I knew little about the subject; here-several decades later-is a better one. Eileen: please forgive the delay.
