ABSTRACT

In this concluding chapter, we will try to address the consequences of this trend towards privatisation in the water sector. Indeed, as highlighted in Chapter 1, the privatisation of water must be seen as just one element of a much larger transformation of the public sector and the State within the context of economic, cultural and technological globalisations. Consequently, when trying to identify, for example, how the public sector can regulate the privatised water companies, one needs to keep in mind that the public sector is itself struggling to cope with the consequences of globalisation. The goal of this chapter is therefore to develop a coherent conceptual framework, allowing for the regulation of an increasingly globalised water sector in the perspective of sustainable water resources management.
