ABSTRACT
William Apes is one of the most intriguing personalities who emerged in the early stages of Native American literature. His four monographs stand out in their times for their critical interpretation of New England’s association with Native Americans. In addition to his literary achievements, Apes is also remembered today for his important role in the Mashpee struggle for autonomy during the Jacksonian era.
