ABSTRACT

Approximately twenty-three Northern Athapaskan languages are spoken by different tribal groups in the western subarctic (Alaska, the Yukon Territories, northern British Columbia, the Northwest Territories, and northern Alberta). These languages are related to others of the Athapaskan family which are spoken on the American Pacific Coast and in the American Southwest. They are more distantly related to Eyak and Tlingit. Taken together, Athapaskan, Eyak, and Tlingit constitute the NaDene linguistic phylum.
